Word of the day: proselytize.

Because of the fantastic bus system of Odenton.  It allowed me to get back a mere 45 minutes later than I would have had I not lost my keys.

Because I had a fairly productive first real day at work.  I didn't feel as hazed as yesterday.

Because of randos on the train and metro-- one bought me coffee and conversed the whole way to DC with me.  The other and I had an exchange on my way from the metro to Union Station that went like this:

*guy next to me gets up to leave*
*woman brushes bag against me*
Woman: Gosh, I'm sorry.
Me: It's okay, it happens.  It's the metro.
Woman: You think I'd have developed a way to not fall on people by now.
Me: Well, it's fine.  I've developed a way to ignore it all.  Really, I'm not bothered at all.
Woman: Do you go to school here?
Me: Nope, I've got an internship for an exchange program and I'm searching for a job in communications.
Woman: You should apply to the Department of the Treasury.  *exchange of names* You know, one grumpy person can make a metro experience bad.  But what's there to be upset about when you're going home?
Me: Are you headed home?
Woman: Yep.
Me: Where do you work?
Woman: The Department of the Treasury.
Me: Imagine that.
Woman: Drop my name with your resume and maybe I'll read something if it comes from you.  Maybe not.  Sometimes it's all about the random encounters.
*Union Station stop*
Woman: Bye!
Me: Um, bye!(?)
*exeunt*

Turns out this woman's like Director for International Affairs or something.  Who knew?

SOTD: Hey Champ - Anything At All. Went through my head during the key crisis. Possibly because I was proselytized to this morning.

She's a soul sucker.

Because MARC tickets are good for more than one specific time.  Heck, they're good for like a year.

Because when I complain about not being able to be assertive enough, the problem is easily fixable-- be more self-assertive.  People are receptive to that sorta thing.

Because I'm sensitive to the Totem Pole Game here.  Even though it causes me stress and I'd rather be blissfully ignorant, or choose to not care.  The latter is probably best.

SOTD: The Melismatics - Soul Sucker. Because they're playing in DC later this month at an Ethiopian restaurant! (?) Also I feel this song expresses my soul as of late.

30 September 2011

In other news, I still get lost at every possible opportunity....

[--Because if nothing pans out, I can start a Georgian restaurant in the DC area, since there is NOTHING to help me out if I suddenly get a craving for khachapuri or namcxvari.  : | ]

[--Because of meeting with old friends for awesome Greek food and impromptu meetings that lead to internships at cool places!]

[--Because of Godka, the finest drink from a new microdistillery, coming soon. Made in an abandoned missile silo with an advanced hydro-cooling system. Godka; closer to heaventm.]

SOTD: Matthew Ebel - Wasting My Time. This is a shoutout to YARebels this week. Especially Friday ; )

29 September 2011

What luck (?)!

[--Because even though I shook the whole night and didn't get much sleep and forgot to bring chocolate, going to the Embassy for my meeting with the Ambassador today was okay.  Although I will have to call the person I'm meeting with tomorrow who was supposed to call me.  Hm.]

[--Because of making metros and lights and the MARC just on time (with a little help from a friend)]

[--Because of not only this possible media thing for the Georgian Embassy, but also an internship lead and a USAID dude giving me his card and permission to name drop!  Win!!]

SOTD: I Fight Dragons - The Geeks Will Inherit the Earth
Thanks, Jeff. : )

28 September 2011

magnetebi, rogor mushaobs?

[--Because of people offering you time and space to stop looking like a drowned rat because you don't have an umbrella.]

[--Because of dancin' pants off at a dive bar with a bunch of returned hippies!]

[--Because of having enough gumption to walk into the Georgian Embassy and talk to a man in Georgian, asking if he knew of any positions at the embassy.  He then e-mails later, saying I have a meeting with the Ambassador tomorrow morning.]

SOTD: ICP - Miracles

27 September 2011

What did Paula do today? Hm...

[--Because I DIDN'T send out a cover letter that began with a sentence fragment.  Caught that one just in time.  What kind of job am I applying for again?  Not something that deals with quality writing, right?]

[--Because I sent out 3 applications before my flash drive decided to eat the cover letters and corresponding CV files.]

[--Because of snarky comments made to roommates instead of the intended party.  Still blows off steam, with 90% less bitchiness!]

SOTD: Bob Gentry - Upside Down. This is on the Jog Tunes Indie podcast. I dig it.

26 September 2011

Urge to destroy CVs... rising

[--Because ‎"We're from Iowa: we're easily amused. All it takes is an itchy butt--sometimes not even that...Sometimes all it takes is a butt."]

[--3/5 applications sent in ain't bad.]

[--Because I was allowed to revamp my profile like 20 times after I submitted my application to add things on one places' job application site. Do they get notification when I change it? Probably.]

SOTD: Skrillex - Kill Everybody (with wicked sick dance moves.)

25 September 2011

Some days are better left un-burnt.

[--Because I didn't burn down the house with the vacuum or the forgotten blueberry syrup.  Both of which started to smoke on me.]

[--Because Mary and I didn't make treacle tart with my culinary skills so blatantly screaming "YOU CAN DO NOTHING TODAY!!!"]

[--Because of friends who are straight up and tell you exactly how you can be better.  Pussyfootin' around ain't for this girl.]

SOTD: Natalie Walker - Colorblind

20 September 2011

Sci-fi movie night!

[--I only have a massive amount of editing work on my CV and resume before submitting.  For a part time internship.]

[--Because of cheesy, awesome eighties movies (one in particular) and the groups of nerds that watch them.  I now know, like, 9 people in this town!]

[--Because of instantaneous help with running routes from my roommate-- mapped out courses and offers to run with me when softball season's over.  Only catch is, I don't run a seven and a half minute mile.]

SOTD: El DeBarge - Who's Johnny.  This is the cheesy, awesome eighties movie I was talking about.

19 September 2011

Jobs, friends, and emo songs.

[--For an Odenton friend count of THREE!! One of whom I don't live with, four if you count the sweet job center lady at the library.]

[--For slews of information about jobs and the MARC train and boosts of confidence ("You're so qualified!  You wrote three grants? WOW! That's a beautiful phrase you wrote!  I would hire you in a heartbeat!"), all from your friendly neighborhood library.]

[--'Bushka may or may not hate us.  Only seven days left!!!!!!]

SOTD: Aiden - Let the Right One In.  I said it before, I'll say it again here.  The video is awesome. 3:05-3:10 = my favorite part. 2:09 and 1:24 are nice, too. I also love the firey guitars and constant showing off of the neck tattoo.  Class.

16 September 2011

Errands.

[--Because of finishing job applications... almost.]

[--Because of close (3 min by car, tops) grocery stores with vast selection.]

[--Because I didn't have a heart attack when I saw the receipt.]

SOTD: Massive Attack - Teardrop

15 September 2011

Settling in to the house and House, M.D.

[--Because of wonderful phrases in the English language such as: "No screaming?  No shouting?  No rending of garments?"  "Your socks are askew,"  and "slattern".]

[--Because of finding promising part-time internships to apply for.  Here's to hoping I don't find out they withhold paychecks regularly, the position doesn't close as soon as I click "submit my resume", and that they reply.]

[--Because of Goodwill.  Desk = 30 dolla'.  HOLLA!]

SOTD: Matt and Kim - Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare

09 September 2011

Scones, suburbia, sports stores.

[--I've got a beautiful, swanky apartment waiting for me in the heart of the Baltimore-DC suburbia that I probably can't afford.]

[--Someone who likes baking said my scones were tasty.  Thanks, Midwest County Fare brand flour.]

[--Someone said someone like me could be useful in a sports store, utilizing my powers of fashionable sportiness to pick out sellable inventory.  I don't think that'd be a bad gig.  The guy who said that is the owner of a sports store.  BUT I'm leaving town in 2 days.]
